The reason for this is that decks are not built with added storage space and therefore contain a lot of unused area.

Take a look at your deck. Are there hoses strewn around? Are the grill accessories sitting on the patio table? How about the pool toys or chemicals, are they placed on the deck floor because you do not want to tote them to the garage? If you see any of these scenarios, or any others, then you should invest in a couple of wooden deck boxes for storage.

And deck boxes are not only used for storage by homeowners and renters; boaters, and others can sufficiently utilize a wooden deck box. Anyone who has a need to store items outside should consider using a deck box.

Where To Use Wood Planters

May 27th, 2008

You can use wood planters in a number of different ways in your garden and even inside your home.  Wood planters are much more sturdy than plastic planters and will not fall over if knocked into by a cat, dog or child.  They are also solid enough to be used outside.

On The Balcony

If you have a balcony, do not let that stop you from having a garden.  Many people use their balconies as gardens in the summer.  They use wood planters to plant anything from flowers to herbs.  The gardens may have to go inside during cold weather, but for the summer, they remain outside.  And because the planters are wood planters, they are sturdy enough to weather storms.  You will not see your wood planter flying down the street during a windy spell, unlike a plastic planter.

Wood planters can also be used attached to the balcony. You can put them on the railing or attach them to the side of the railings.  This is a great way to show off your green thumb.

Another use for wood planters on the balcony is to use them as hanging planters.  You can attach the planter to the eaves and put flowers or plants in the planter.  Make sure that the wood planter you use for this project is lightweight.

By The Front Door

Nothing says welcome like a wood planter that is filled with flowers next to your front door.  You can put in a bunch of flowers and even some plants like ivy and have a virtual bouquet great your visitors in your wooden planter by the front door.

Wooden planters that are used by the front door are usually very large and will not fall over in case of a strong wind.  This is very important.  They are not as heavy as stone, but they are less expensive and very sturdy.

On the Window Sills

You can use outdoor planters on the window sills.  Allow them to hang from the windows and plant flower inside.  Nothing looks nicer than this, especially if you do this on all of the window sills.  This will give your home a country appeal.

In The Garden

Do not think that all of the plants that you have must be planted in the ground. You may choose to put some in wood planters either to get them started or for decorative purposes.  Either way, your garden will be the better for having these wooden planters around.

You can even create your own wood planters with railroad ties.  Section off part of the yard and fill it with planting soil. Then create your own garden.  It can be a flower garden or a vegetable garden, but your self made wood planter will separate it from the rest of the yard.

Wood planters have many different uses for the avid gardener.  You can use them in many different ways.  There are several types of wood planters from which to choose as well as colors.  Find the perfect planters to match your décor.

What Type of Wood is Right for Your Wood Bench?

May 27th, 2008

There are many materials that a person can have their bench constructed from these days.  The most popular of these materials is still wood, and may always be.  There are many different woods to choose from when ordering or purchasing a bench.  There are the different kinds of cedar, the different pines, cherry, poplar, many hard woods, eucalyptus, beech, birch, and still others.  Each wood has its own special qualities and aging processes.  Many people prefer wood because of the graceful aging process that many of these for mentioned woods go through over the course of time.  The different cedars are well known for their transformation from their beautiful browns to a majestic looking silvery gray.  Depending on a person’s personal preferences, any of these woods are a great choice.

The cedars remain on of the most popular woods and one of the most environmentally friendly models of benches and other furniture.  There is northern white cedar, western red cedar, and plain cedar.  Northern white cedar is popular in New England and all over the west coats, but is used mostly for the construction of indoor furniture.  However, northern white cedar is also quite impervious and resistant to decay, insects, and weather as are the other cedars.  Western red cedar is more of a softwood that has beautiful natural colors that are preferable to many people.  Even though it is more of a soft wood, it is just as durable and impervious to the weather and elements as the two other cedars.  Regular cedar is nearly as strong as oak.  Cedar has been ideal for outdoor furniture like benches for many years.  Cedar is naturally resistant to the outdoors and is a wonderful choice.

There are also several different types of pine that have become popular for building benches and other outdoor furniture.  Brazilian pine and yellow pine are the two most popular pines for making and constructing benches.  Brazilian pine is known for its exceptional ability to hold screws.  It is also known to be easy to finish, which gives it a honey colored look.  This Brazilian pine does not produce the natural oils that fight insects, rotting, and weather like the cedars.  However, it is still strong, durable, and can be kept looking young and strong by applying a finish to it once or twice a year.  Yellow pine is a harder wood and is more closely related to white pine than its Brazilian brother.  Yellow pine has a certain natural beauty that is sought after by many people; however, yellow pine can degrade quickly when unprotected.  It is also not good for holding paint or other heavy finishes.

When choosing a wood for your wooden bench, keep in mind where you are located and what your weather is like.  Certain woods are better in certain climates, and some woods are great in all climates like cedar.  It is also good to keep in mind how much maintenance you are going to want to do over the years.  Most people want as low maintenance as possible, and there are some woods that will not allow this.

The Benefits of Wrought Iron Furniture

Durability and weather resistance are the two best aspects of wrought iron furniture. Besides this, it is forever in style, has an elegant look and, in general, matches almost every kind of house style. You can find wrought iron furniture suitable for modern as well as antique and old-fashioned décor.

Wrought iron furniture material is practically indestructible. Furniture made out of wrought iron can hold any weight and size without being even slightly damaged.

The Properties of Wrought Iron Furniture

The word ‘wrought’ is derived from the old past tense of the verb “to work”. Therefore wrought iron can best be described as iron that has been worked. In chemical terms, furniture made out of wrought iron has lower than 15 % iron content. It also contains some slag. Wrought iron is usually tough, malleable and can be easily welded. This property of the material makes wrought iron furniture durable, strong and able to be shaped into different designs. Wrought iron is usually corrosion resistant and, therefore, is ideal as outdoor or patio furniture.

One of the major advantages of wrought iron furniture is that it can be transformed to give a different look. For example, if you simply throw a tablecloth over a wrought iron table, it has a more formal look. As soon as you remove it, the look becomes casual. Therefore, by simple innovative use of linen you can use your wrought iron furniture to transform the look of a room.

Disadvantages of Wrought Iron Furniture

Wrought iron furniture is often expensive. However, the advantages far outweigh this minor drawback. Yes, you have to pay more to buy wrought iron furniture. But, in the end, it is so long lasting and elegant that buying wrought iron furniture is worth the money. Usually molded into exquisite designs, the wrought iron pieces add an elegant look to any patio.

Wrought iron furniture is also susceptible to environmental changes. Iron is a good conductor and so in chilly weather the wrought iron furniture can become too cold to touch. Again, they can become very hot in summer. Wrought iron furniture is also vulnerable to oxidation and therefore can often develop rust.

Maintenance of Wrought Iron Patio Furniture

A little careful maintenance can ensure a long life for your wrought iron furniture. To make your wrought iron furniture weather resistant, you must paint it regularly. Once treated, you can leave it outside in winter. Have a good look at the finish when buying wrought iron furniture. If there are any cracks in the finish, get it touched up with paint. Clean your wrought iron furniture with mild soap and water.

Wooden Lawn Furniture - Choosing the Right Wood For Your Outdoor Space

May 21st, 2008

Choosing wooden lawn furniture for your outdoor room can be a daunting task. Not only are there infinite styles to choose from, there are also many different types of woods to try to differentiate. Here are some commonly used types of wood for wooden outdoor furniture:

Teak

Everybody loves teak. It’s extremely durable and very low maintenance; it needs to be oiled every once in a while if you want to maintain the original rich honey color that exemplifies teak. If you don’t mind it turning a distinguished grey over the years, you don’t even have to oil it. The only real disadvantage to teak is that it’s a slow growing tree, which makes it less available than other materials and drives up the price. You can expect to pay anywhere from $1000 - $8000 for a teak dining set, but because teak lasts so long outside, it’s a long term investment. In fact, many retailers of teak are so confident in its ability to endure years outdoors that they offer as much as a ten year warrantee.

Bamboo

Bamboo creates a relaxed, zen-like feeling on a deck or patio. It’s also the preferred tiki bar material. Though it’s technically a grass and really wood, bamboo patio furniture looks so much like wood that it definitely deserves mention here. If you’re environmentally conscious, you’ll love that bamboo is probably the most renewable of "woods" for patio furniture because of its extremely fast growth. It’s also relatively inexpensive and low maintenance. Washing it with a bit of soap and water will usually suffice.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a fantastic alternative to teak wooden lawn furniture. It has a similar color tone to teak and also provides excellent outdoor durability. It’s also a faster growing tree and is more sustainable than teak. Because of this, wooden lawn furniture made from eucalyptus is typically around half the price of a comparable teak set. However, it can be difficult to find and is not widely available just yet.

Redwood

Redwood wooden deck furniture comes in three varieties: old growth, mature, and young. Old growth furniture is made from logs that have been on the ground since excessive logging decades ago. Mature trees are approximately 100 years of age, and young refers to trees that are 50 years or younger. Redwood is an extremely slow growing tree, making it very difficult to sustain than other woods.
